McDaniel Receives $2 Million for Mathematics and Computer Science Department

SPURRING STEM GROWTH

McDaniel College has been awarded $2 million through the Maryland E-Nnovation Initiative Fund (MEIF), a state program created to spur basic and applied research in scientific and technical fields at colleges and universities.

The funding will be used to establish an Endowed Professorship in Computational Innovation and Emerging Technologies in the college’s Mathematics and Computer Science department.

The new professor will integrate experiential learning and industry collaboration into McDaniel’s Mathematics and Computer Science department curriculum while developing coursework focused on emerging technologies. In addition to overseeing student-led research and entrepreneurship projects, the professor will build partnerships with Maryland tech companies to help meet the evolving needs of employers.

The program is administered by the Maryland Department of Commerce, which joined with six Maryland colleges and universities, including McDaniel, in endowing more than $23 million to fund new research professorships. Institutions are required to raise matching grants with $11.7 million in total raised in private funding by the six schools; Maryland Commerce approved matching grants of $11.45 million to support the endowments.

Created by the General Assembly during the 2014 legislative session, the Maryland E-Nnovation Initiative Fund has provided more than $98 million in funding to leverage more than $108 million in private donations. The funding can be used to pay salaries of newly endowed department chairs, staff, and support personnel in designated scientific and technical fields of study; fund related research fellowships for graduate and undergraduate students; and purchase lab equipment and other basic infrastructure and equipment.

Thanks to these funds, we will have the opportunity to expand our Computer Science program. We look forward to beginning the search for a new faculty member who will bring valuable IT industry experience along with a strong commitment to real-world applications.

McDaniel College and LifeBridge Health Announce Landmark Partnership

McDaniel College and LifeBridge Health Announce Landmark Partnership

CARING BRAVELY

Leaders from LifeBridge Health and McDaniel College joined together at Carroll Hospital on Oct. 30 to announce a landmark partnership that not only helps to address the nursing shortage in Carroll County and the surrounding region through McDaniel’s new Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) program, but also benefits McDaniel students and LifeBridge Health team members.

Carroll Hospital worked with McDaniel to build the college’s B.S.N. program, which is helping to address the need for qualified nurses by combining the liberal arts with the technical knowledge and skills to prepare future nurses who are practicing in diverse health care settings. This new partnership expands this effort by having McDaniel’s Nursing program housed at Carroll Hospital, including offices, Nursing classrooms, and labs.

Beginning in fall 2026, McDaniel’s Nursing students will have access to Carroll Hospital’s state-of-the-art facilities, including the Kahlert Foundation Simulation Center, and be provided early and frequent exposure to clinical work within a hospital setting.

In addition to Carroll Hospital, other LifeBridge Health locations in the Baltimore area — Sinai Hospital, Northwest Hospital, Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital, and Grace Medical Center — will serve as the primary clinical site placement locations for all McDaniel Nursing students. McDaniel’s Nursing students will also be eligible for LifeBridge Health’s CARE BRAVELY scholarship if they make a commitment to working in the LifeBridge Health system after graduation.

Students in McDaniel’s first Nursing cohort, which began at the college this fall 2024 and will begin their studies at Carroll Hospital in their junior year, were in attendance, along with business and community leaders, as well as government officials.

Embedding the students’ clinical coursework into the hospital itself through the construction of classrooms and other educational spaces will enable students to have invaluable, hands-on experience in a hospital environment, helping them build confidence and competence in their future profession.

Donation Supports McDaniel Women’s Leadership Network Scholarship

Donation Supports McDaniel Women’s Leadership Network Scholarship

FIRST-YEAR OPPORTUNITIES

McDaniel College has received a $10,000 donation from higher education partner CampusWorks to support an endowed scholarship through the McDaniel Women’s Leadership Network. The scholarship is awarded annually to an incoming first-year student who has exhibited leadership potential through academic, athletic, and/or community service.

Students do not apply separately for the scholarship but are selected from the admissions applicant pool. The scholarship is renewable all four years.

“We at CampusWorks are profoundly honored to contribute to the McDaniel Women’s Leadership Network Endowed Scholarship Fund,” said Liz Murphy, chief executive officer and chairman of the board for CampusWorks.

Murphy has also personally donated to help fund a new experiential and emergency use fund, also through the McDaniel Women’s Leadership Network, to provide grants to current McDaniel students whose financial circumstances may prevent them from pursuing undergraduate research, internships, study abroad, licensures or certifications, and more.

McDaniel College President Julia Jasken leads the advisory council for the McDaniel Women’s Leadership Network, an exclusive group of women leaders who are focused on supporting women in pursuing their personal and professional goals.

The McDaniel Women’s Leadership Network comprises alums and friends of McDaniel College who are working to build connections and develop programs to attract and engage women in the life of the college. The network is guided by four pillars, including mentorship, community, career, and philanthropy.

Since 1999, CampusWorks has been collaborating with colleges and universities to develop and implement insightful strategies that improve institutional effectiveness and enhance the student experience.

This donation underscores our commitment to developing the next generation of female leaders. Education is the most powerful tool we can provide, and supporting these promising young women in their academic and leadership journeys fills me with immense pride and hope for the future.
